How does the FAQ service work and can I trust its recommendations?

Treeshop has more than 20 years experience in growing trees indigenous to Southern Africa. At our farm near Pretoria, we have had first hand experience of climate effects on tree growth. We have lived through mild winters, with minimum temperatures not falling below -2C (yes we measure them with mini/max thermometers, placed in different locations in the nursery). We survived a severe one-in-twenty-year cold spell, when the temperature fell to -8C! We have seen the effect of heat waves. We understand the importance of plant mix, fertilization and watering. We have had to deal with just about every pest in the book... But most important -over all this time we have been enjoying the beauty of South African trees, and the pleasure of advising our clients and sharing their gardening success.

Over the years we have systematically documented in a database some tree attributes as we observed them in the nursery: Growth rate, growth form, root growth, frost tolerance, leaf cycles, flowering cycles, seed cycles, stem development,  proneness to pests, fertilization needs, and water needs. We have also experienced (some) of the ecological values of our indigenous trees: their value to birds, bees, insects and even the odd snake!  And what we could not observe first hand, we learned from the experience of of our clients and from trusted scientific sources.
