Umbrella thorn's genus name changed to Vachellia (previously Acacia). Vachellia tortilis tolerates severe frost and drought.  It is a slow growing, deciduous thorn tree. You can easily identify Vachellia tortilis from its characteristic umbrella like growth form. Umbrella thorn makes an excellent  container tree and responds well to pruning. It is also a popular bonsai species.  Plant Acacia tortilis in 'n large pot as a beautiful focal point in a small (or even very small) garden. The species name "tortilis" stems from the tree's contorted pods.

Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-1;  Pollen, P0-3, Extrafloral nectar, EN0-2; Flowering months 10-3, (12-1).   (See  blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
