Vachellia (previously Acacia) sieberiana is moderately frost and drought tolerant. Paperbark thorn is a fast growing deciduous thorn tree with a very wide spreading, umbrella-like crown. It has an aggressive root system. The species bears beautiful, cream colored, globose flowers, often in profusion and attracting many insects. Flowers develop into fairly large pods, which can be quite messy when they are shed in spring.
Some gardening ideas:
Paperbark thorn is an easy grower. It becomes huge with a crown that may exceed 20m in diameter. It is an ideal shade tree for large gardens, but plant it far away from any paving. Vachellia sieberiana is unsuitable for container planting. It can not be trained as a bonsai either.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-3; Pollen, P0-2; Flowering months 9-4 (11-1). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
