Bend-me-not (Buig-my-nie boom) is a scarce indigenous tree with a small natural habitat in and around the Baviaans Kloof in the Eastern Cape. It is a medium/small, evergreen tree. Under favorable conditions it will grow at a medium/fast rate. Yong leaves have a a tint of read, which matures into a canopy of deep green, dense foliage. Smelophyllum capense's flowers are inconspicuous. Branches are somewhat brittle, hence the popular name "Bend-me-not". Larger trees tolerate frost, but young trees are frost sensitive.
