Small-leaved dragon tree  (Kleinblaardrakeboom) has an interesting multi-stem growth form. Dracaena mannii is evergreen, grows at an average-fast rate and is mildly frost sensitive. It is one of our smaller trees and has a somewhat aggressive root system.  It prefers compost rich soil, but will also grow in clay soil. The tree bears beautiful, fragrant flowers which soon develop into bright orange berry-like fruit. The latter stays on the tree for some time.

A few gardening ideas:

Dracaena mannii is a "must plant" if you want something different and special in your garden. The species' shape, its long, narrow, dark green leaves and versatility when it comes to soil type, combined with its unique appearance makes this tree a winner. Small-leaved dragon tree comes highly recommended as focal point in a  small garden, or even very small garden if you plant it inside a large concrete ring which is at least 50cm deep. Such rings are used to construct manholes and are readily available from suppliers to the civil construction industry. Dracaena mannii is not a messy tree. It may need occasional pruning, which will stimulate new growth. Birds love to build their nests in its dense foliage. You can also plant this tree in a large pot.

Value to honeybees: Nectar, N2?;  Pollen, P2?;  Flowering months 8-10.   (See  blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
