Senegalia galpinii (previously Acasia galpinii) tolerates moderate frost. It is also drought resistant. Monkey Thorn is a large, fast growing, deciduous thorn tree. The tree's course bark is a beautiful feature. It has light-green, twice compound, feather-like leaves and bears cream-white spiky flowers, sometimes in profusion.
Some gardening ideas:
The tree's beautiful textured bark and its deep shade during summer makes it a good choice for a large garden - and definitely NOT a good choice for a small garden. Senegalia galpinii is an ideal species to plant in a large pot or container, thereby limiting its size. It responds well to pruning and can be shaped to exhibit a striking appearance. Use this approach when you plant Monkey thorn in a small or even very small garden. The species soon forms a thickset trunk, making it a popular bonsai.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-4; Pollen, P0-2; Flowering months 8-11 (9-10). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
