Searsia pyroides | Common currant | Gewone taaibos trees for sale
Common currant (Gewone taaibos) is a medium-small, deciduous tree with a shrub-like growth habit and non-aggressive root system. Although the tree is wide spread in South Africa, it is rather scarce in the nursery trade. Searsia pyroides is known for its variation in appearance and growth characteristics. It tolerates severe frost and is quite water wise. It may grow a bit wild and untidy and needs occasional pruning. Plant Common currant in a cluster with other trees in a large garden to create a bush veld look and feel. The tree is a good choice for rehabilitating eco-estate developments.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-1; Pollen, P0-1; Flowering months 8-5, (10-12). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
