Red currant (Bostaaibos) is a medium sized,  evergreen (sometimes deciduous) tree that grows at an average rate. It has large (for the Genus) trifoliate, dark-green leaves which cast a dense shade. Female trees bear clusters of red, berry-like fruit, sometimes in profusion. In climates where Searsia chirindensis is deciduous, it exhibits striking red autumn colors.  Red currant tolerates light frost and needs modest water. Its root system is mildly aggressive.

A few gardening ideas:

Searsia chrindensis is an easy grower but may require occasional pruning if you want it to grow single trunk. It is a beautiful shade tree for larger gardens. When in fruit Red current will attract many fruit eating birds.

Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-3;  Pollen, P0-2;   Flowering months 7-2, (10-11).   (See  blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
