Umzimbeet withstands light frost but does not tolerate drought. It is a semi-deciduous tree with a tendency to branch low down, especially when young. Millettia grandis has large, dark-green, once compound leaves which have a red-brown color when young. Umzimbeet bears striking purple flower heads. It’s pod-like fruit is dehiscent and splits open with a loud bang, ejecting seeds up to 6m far. It is fun to observe this phenomenon! Millettia grandis’ root system is not aggressive. The tree responds positively to pruning and thrives in a large container. Umzimbeet is an undiscovered jewel and excellent candidate for landscaping small and medium size gardens.

Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0;  Extrafloral Nectar, EN0-1;  Pollen, P0;   Flowering months 11-3.   (See  blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
