Galpinia transvaalica | Wild pride-of-india for sale | Transvaalliguster
Wild pride-of-india (Transvaal privet) tolerates light frost and is somewhat drought resistant. It is a beautiful, evergreen tree, often with a multi-trunk growth form. The tree exhibits bright-green, glossy leaves and dense, white, flower heads. These develop into clusters of red-brown fruits. Galpinia transvaalica's root system is somewhat aggressive. The tree is of medium size and is therefor not suitable for a small garden. Transvaal privet does well in a large container and responds well to pruning. Use this method if you want to plant Galpinia transvaalica in a small garden.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N1-2; Extrafloral Nectar, EN0-1; Pollen, P0-2; Propolis, PR0-2 Flowering months 10-5, (1-3). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
