Faidherbia albida | Ana-tree for sale | Anaboom
Ana-tree (Anaboom) is a very fast growing, large, deciduous tree with a single trunk and informal, spreading canopy. It has an aggressive and invasive root system. Faidherbia albida has twice compound grey-green leaves and strait spines. Its twisted, red-brown pods are quite large and is characteristic of the species. The species' natural habitat is along river beds and on floodplains. Hence it is likely that it will grow in water logged soil. It is known to be slightly frost sensitive.
A few gardening ideas:
Ana-tree is a no-nonsense, easy grower, requiring little maintenance other than cleaning up fallen pods. Due to its open branch structure and fine leaves it does not cast a dense shade. The tree's invasive root system makes it unsuitable for small gardens and we recommend planting only in large gardens, parks and game farms (to stabilize river banks). Faidherbia albida bears creamy-white spiky flowers, sometimes in profusion. Its leaves an especially its pods, which are produced in abundance, are excellent food sources for cattle and game.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-1; Pollen, P0-1; Flowering months 5-9 (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
