Erythrina zeyheri | Plough-breaker tree for sale | Ploegbreker boom te koop
Plough-breaker (Ploegbreker) is a unique tree for the connoisseur. Its new leaves sprout from below ground early spring, followed by most beautiful, long-stalked red flowers. Leaves die off in autumn, leaving short stubs that may sprout again together with the next season's new sprouts. Below ground Erythrina zeyheri develops a spreading, bulky, tuberous root system. There is more tree below the ground than above! Erythrina zeyheri is frost sensitive, but considering its growth habit this is of no concern.
A few gardening ideas:
Plant Plough-breaker for its beautiful flowers and as "something out of the ordinary". It prefers full sun and should not be over-watered during winter. In our experience, of all Erythrina species zeyheri is the least prone to attack by the stem borer Terastia africana. (See article published by Researchgate.net.) Gardeners should take note of Plough-breaker's spreading growth form. Consider to contain its spread by planting it inside a concrete ring (as used in civil construction for constructing sewage man-holes).
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N2?; Pollen, P0?; Flowering months 10-12. (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
