Erythrina acanthocarpa | Tambuki thorn for sale | Tamboekie doring te koop
Tambuki thorn (Tamboekiedoring) is a unique tree for the connoisseur. It has rather sparse, shrub-like stems and leaf growth above ground but well developed tuberous roots. There is more tree below ground than above! But once per year, in spring, it bears large, striking flowers. Erythrina acanthocarpa is frost sensitive, but considering its growth habit this is not of much concern.
A few gardening ideas:
Plant Tambuki thorn for its beautiful flowers and as "something out of the ordinary". It prefers full sun and should not be over-watered during winter. Erythrina acanthocarpa is prone to attack by a stem borer, especially when young. These small worms (about 1cm) bore into the above-surface root ball, and once inside, can devour much of the sub-surface roots, sometimes killing the plant. The pest is easy to detect but difficult to control. Researchgate.net published an article on the problem.
