Dracaena aletriformis | Large-leaved Dragon-tree for sale | Grootblaardrakeboom te koop
Large-leaved Dragon-tree is classified by Coates Palgrave as a "plant that is distinctive and easily recognized by its character and habit". It mostly grows in shady areas, often as a multi-trunk specimen. Its large leaves are characteristic. Dracaena aletriformis' erect flower panicles may be 1m long! Flowers are white to yellow-green, sweetly scented and attract nectar feeding birds and insects. The Large-leaved Dragon-tree is frost sensitive, but growing in shade provides a micro-climate which will protect them, even when "outside" temperature drops to -2 degrees Celsius. Dracaena aletriformis is evergreen, slow growing and does not have an invasive root system. It requires modest amounts of water year round.
A few gardening ideas:
Large-leaved Dragon-tree is a must if you want to create a tropical effect in your garden. It is one of only a few indigenous trees that thrive in shade. The species is a well known indoor plant. Consider to contrast the large leaves of Dracaena aletriformis with Dracaena mannii (Small-leaved Dragon-tree). The latter is a scarce species and quite unique. Planting them together in your garden will attract much attention and conversation. It will provide a really beautiful tropical effect.
