Cussonia paniculata sinuata | Mountain cabbage tree for sale | Bergkiepersol
Mountain cabbage tree (also High veld cabbage tree) is very frost hardy and drought tolerant to the extreme. It is a deciduous tree which grows fast initially, but takes a long time to form a canopy. Cussonia paniculata has large, unique, blue-green leaves. Six to eight leaflets attach to a single point on the leaf stem. While the margins of leaflets of the sub-species sinuata is deeply lobed, sub-species paniculata is not. Highveld cabbage tree has a neat, upright growth form. Although a mature tree is not large, it has an extensive tuberous root system.
Some gardening ideas:
Mountain cabbage tree makes a beautiful focal point in the garden. But be warned about its root system! Allow at least 4 meters distance to the nearest paved area. A practical alternative is to plant Cussonia paniculata in a large, well drained container. It will constrain the tree's mature size, but offers the opportunity to enjoy this unique and beautiful tree at any position in your garden. Container planting is also the way to go if you have a small or even very small garden. Mountain cabbage tree is prone to root rot. Do not plant it near to any sprinkling system. Summer rain is all it needs to thrive.
