Sjambok pod is frost sensitive and quite drought tolerant. It is a neat, upright, deciduous tree with bright-green, once divided leaves. Cassia abbreviate grows at an average rate and bears bright-yellow flowers, sometimes in profusion. These develop into long (600mm) round pods, about the thickness of a sjambok – hence its name. Pods remain on the tree for a long time.

Sjambok pod's root system in non-aggressive and mature trees are rather small, hence the species is a good choice for a small garden. Plant it for its striking flowers and out of the ordinary fruit. Cassia abbreviate does well in a container and responds well to pruning. It is a popular bonsai.
