Bauhinia bowkeri | Kei Bauhinia for sale | Kei-beesklou boom
Kei Bauhinia (Kei-beesklou) is a small straggly tree. It is a new addition towards our goal to eventually offer all the indigenous species in the genus Bauhinia. B bowkeri bears clusters of white, showy and sweetly scented flowers (see photo below). It is deciduous, has non-invasive roots and tolerates light frost up to -2 degrees Celsius. Kei Bauhinia's natural habitat is along and inland of the East Cape province and along the Kei river in this area - hence its popular name. The species is fairly water wise.
A few gardening ideas:
Kei Bauhinia is a no-nonsence, easy grower. It is a "must buy" for a gardener who whishes to show case the variation in leaf size and flower form, color and size of the Bauhinia genus.
Value to honeybees, expected to be similar to that of other Bauhinia species: Nectar, N0-2; Pollen, P0-1; Flowering months 1-12, (11-2). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
