Pride-of-De-Kaap (Afrikaans name is Vlam-van-die-Vlakte) is a small, deciduous tree with a shrub-like growth form and non-aggressive roots. The tree grows at a medium rate and is known for its showy orange-red flowers, often occurring more than once per season. Bauhinia galpinii tolerates mild frost and is quite water wise.
A few gardening ideas:
Pride-of-De-Kaap is an easy grower, requiring very little (if any) maintenance. The species' shrubby growth form makes it an ideal screening tree. Bauhinia galpinii is recommended for planting in a small or even very small garden for its flowers. It responds well to pruning and may be planted in a container. Plant one or more trees as focal point near to your swimming pool. Although it sheds it leaves, they are quite large and the tree thus not overly messy.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0-2; Pollen, P0-1; Flowering months 1-12, (11-2). (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
