Tabernaemontana elegans | Toad-tree for sale | Laeveldse paddaboom
Toad-tree is a small, fast growing, deciduous tree. It is frost sensitive and requires modest water. Its large, bright green leaves turn bright yellow in autumn. Tabernaemontana elegans has a corky trunk and bears large, toad-like fruit. When ripe, they split open to reveal a bright orange pulp, packed with seeds. Fruit capsules may remain on the tree for a long time. Toad-tree is an ideal candidate for planting in a small garden as "something different". It does well in a large container.
Value to honeybees: Nectar, N2?; Pollen, P?; Flowering months 9-4. (See blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
